As the taxi’s tires hit the cobblestoned streets of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, my curiosity to peel back the layers of this 16th-century colonial town ignited. Emerging from the darkness of an hour-and-a-half drive from Querétaro airport, the town unveiled itself like a hidden gem, exuding the charm of a bygone era.

In Miguel Nogueira’s words of NN Arquitetura: “Practically was built from the ground up given that all that existed was ruins. The hotel’s founders, Uri Maeir, Hillel Gassenbauer, and Amir Madeson, were drawn to the historical value of the two dilapidated 17th-century buildings.
The designers cite inspiration such as Mies van der Rohe’s cruciform columns for the Barcelona Pavilion in 1929 and Miguel Fiasco’s IBM Office Building in Madrid, influences clear within the language of the collection. There is a landing underneath to store objects below the top to keep things clean and organized on busy days.
The Mexico-based studio had been inspired by wood carving and carpentry traditions during the 17th and 18th centuries and it was during a walk through the streets of San Miguel de Allende that Mestiz ran into Don Javier, a craftsman who still practices this lost art. Mestiz’s latest collaboration is a bit of a serendipitous meeting.
