For the past several months, I've been experimenting on the iPad with the Apple Pencil. While it has sped up my sketch process considerably, I'm still trying to figure out how and if I'll use it for final art. That decision is far down the road, but in the meantime, I'm having a great time exploring applications like Adobe Photoshop Sketch and Procreate as I consider ways to recreate the look of my analog illustration digitally.
A while back we interviewed Alicja and Jules, the creative duo behind Create Zine, a publication they send out free to creative industry commissioners showcasing awesomely talented artists, designers, illustrators and photographers. They recently got in touch to tell us about some changes they’ve made to the zine, specifically changing from newsprint to recycled stock.

In his class Create a Knockout Design Portfolio , award-winning designer and art director Ram Castillo unveiled crucial design principles that should be factored into every design you make. We use a fulfillment warehouse to store and ship UPPERCASE magazine and books where we dutifully pay the monthly storage fees and associated handling costs. However, starting in September, that company is implementing storage surcharges. In addition to monthly rent, they will be charging another $10.25 USD per cubic foot for products in inventory that are 6-12 months old and $20.50 USD per cubic foot for products that are older than one year.
The Chatsworth House estate is not only a great place to visit because of its culture and heritage, but because it appeals to people of all ages. The Farmyard and Adventure Playground is obvioulsy a huge attraction for children and so I was asked to design and illustrate a map and leaflet to appeal to a younger audience, whilst retaining a sophisicated feel.

'Ratty's House' watercolour and gouache 24 x 31cm This little 'The Wind in the Willows' illustration was completed Thursday - as hot of the drawing board as I can get. This is what Mole sees when he reaches the riverbank and claps eyes on Ratty for the first time. I had lots of fun working on the trees, especially flicking masking fluid around to get the speckled bark effect.

As the ways we use the web continue to grow and evolve, we, as its well-intentioned makers and stewards, needed something better than making simple collections of pages over and over again. Design patterns, component libraries, or even style guides have become the norm for organizations big and small.

When we design products or websites for people like ourselves, there are many others who are, as a result, left out. From visually impaired users who rely on assistive technology, to people with a temporary injury such as a broken arm, tech users are forever diverse and beautifully unique. The products we design can, and should, reflect the extremely wide range of human experiences and needs.
I was lucky enough to be asked to be part of a Wes Anderson themed exhibition to celebrate the release of his newest film 'Isle Of Dogs' in March. The exhibition, on display at The Electric Cinema in Birmingham, shows illustrator's interpretations of their favourite Wes Anderson films - so, it was a toughie, but I chose to create this Moonrise Kingdom themed print featuring the characters Sam and Suzy.

Email communication is an integral part of the user experience for nearly every web application that requires a login. It’s also one of the first interactions the user has after signing up. Yet too often both the content and context of these emails is treated as an afterthought (at best), with the critical parts that users see first—sender name and email, subject, and preheader—largely overlooked.

The following are some of Nick's classic cover ideas for MAD. But Nick led a much broader life, full of professional accomplishment in varied areas (he was member of the Dramatist Guild, ASCAP, the Writers Guild of America, and the National Cartoonist Society).
Thomas Edison once said “Vision without execution is hallucination.” This statement applies not just to invention, but to graphic design. One of the greatest strengths of graphic designers is the ability to first develop a concept and then execute it to make it real.
