Illustrating Small Business Saturday 2016

Emmeline Illustration

and after only being able to feature a few of the people that wanted to be involved, I decided to run it again in 2016 with a brand new series! For Small Business Saturday last year , I wanted to create a series of illustrations representing the amazing diversity of this country's small businesses. I got in touch with the Small Business 100 (which I was lucky enough to be part of last year), and asked for real-world inspiration to give the project a collaborative edge!

Thought Bubble 2016

Emmeline Illustration

Last weekend saw the Royal Armouries Museum site in Leeds flood with comics and illustration lovers for this year's Thought Bubble Comics Festival. I've been looking forward to Thought Bubble all year, especially after my first time tabling there last November. I'll admit that after Thought Bubble commissioned me to illustrate their official festival image back in February, the prospect of seeing my illustration on a huge scale (above!)

The Top 6 Design Moments Of 2016

But I realised, as 2016 draws to a close, I rarely showcase a lot of the work I do behind the scenes for more corporate clients - but this year has been full of work for local schools, festivals, and national business events, that I thought it'd be worth sharing a few of my favourite pieces! So, by now you're probably used to seeing lots of my personal work, sketches, or newly released published work online.

About two years ago, H&Co Senior Designer Andy Clymer proposed that we design a monospace typeface. Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

As powerful as typography can be in setting a reader’s expectations, it’s often the dialogue between typefaces that most effectively communicates how information is meant to be understood. Dictionaries use bold Antiques and delicate Ionics to distinguish their headwords and definitions; wayfinding systems use different fonts to identify routes and destinations.

IPSE Magazine Cover Illustration

Emmeline Illustration

Heyo! I made the cover of IPSE magazine! This one's extra special as I was commissioned to create an illustrated self-portrait (always tricky!) to celebrate my Freelancer of the Year award in June. Exciting. It's a great alternative to the usual winner's photo as it lets me show exactly what my work is like (rather than trying to describe it, which is always a little complicated), and, well, it sidesteps a little bit of an Emmeline blush seeing giant pictures of my real-life face in print.

I really need to ask a really big favour for folks who are in Toronto area. I worked with The Toronto Market Company again for another foodie based event. Artwork was needed for promotional material and banners for an artisan market that would be held along Toronto's waterfront. The booths would be a mixture of food, crafts, jewelry and plant stalls. And the opening of the the event would coincide with the launch of a new cycle route along the waterfront.

WORTH A SECOND LOOK: HANK VIRGONA

Illustration Art

Hundreds of talented illustrators are never mentioned in the history books on illustration. For example, Life Magazine employed an average of 25 different illustrators every week. In Life 's first 50 years, they produced over 60,000 illustrations. Yet who can remember more than a handful of their names? Many of these "forgotten" illustrators were terrible and are better forgotten, but some did excellent work.

Italics Examined

Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

For as many kinds of typefaces as there will ever be, there’ll be even more kinds of italics. Nothing in the design of a roman typeface dictates what its italic will look like, and since the role of an italic is to be not only sympathetic with its roman but visibly different from it, italics are often free to explore unexpected constructions, or divergent visual traditions. More so than romans, italics have a close connection with handwriting.

For the last six days I have been working intensely on this large 90 x 50cm watercolour painting. It might not be a mural but it's large enough for me! Fuzzy photo time! Still using the drafting I was given when I was a school boy. You can see I returned to the usual sepia tonal under-painting to maintain a warm hue throughout the image. I decided if all the action is inside a tent lit by gas lamps, without natural light, then all the shadows are going to be warm. Fuzzy / wonky photo!

Type and Wine

Fonts by Hoefler&Co.

When exploring how new fonts work together, we always find ourselves talking about dinner. The world of cuisine offers so many natural parallels for typography, and a robust vocabulary that we’re quick to borrow: What does this font taste like? Is it a garnish, or the entrée itself? Is it adding heat, or sweetness, or spice? What might it go with? Food and dining offer indispensable reference points, which by analogy can make it easier to communicate what we see in a piece of design.
