Edmondson chose to tap into a 1970s Herb Lubalin vibe when he was asked to design a T-shirt for the 2017 Typographics festival. His starting point was Lubalin’s famous Oh! I have no idea if anything like this ever happened. But it seems possible when I look at Ohno Blazeface and Blazeface Italic.

A glossy silvery period followed in the early 2000s, and then in 2007 Penguin Press art director Jim Stoddart introduced Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase’s Avant Garde as a typeface – which remains in use today.

Shortly after being sentenced to jail time for the Eros periodical he started with Herb Lubalin, Ralph Ginzburg launched Fact magazine in 1964, again enlisting Lubalin as art director. Lubalin understood that Fact magazine was all about the attitude, and as a great art director knew when design should take a step back.
