The Meme Effect. There have been many internet crazes since the inception of the World Wide Web in 1989. Most are short-lived and seem to blow up overnight but fade almost as quickly. Some of these fleeting fads include the ice-bucket challenge, planking and the outrageously obnoxious supermarket-based spectacle that was gallon smashing. . But other online crazes have proved far more steadfast.

In the beginning, there are many circles. These days you’ll find me in deep space as I complete final art for my next picture book collaboration with Candlewick Press. THE DAY THE UNIVERSE EXPLODED MY HEAD is a collection of humorous poems about space by poet, performer, and educator, Allan Wolf. Of course, sharing art at this stage is verboten, but here are a few details from my desk. sometimes with a dash of salt.

A quick look at some of the kit I use and recommend. I’ve worked from home since 2005. The home’s changed six or seven times — one reason why a minimal approach is helpful — but there’s some standard gear that sticks around, and I definitely find it easier to focus when the desk isn’t cluttered. BenQ PD3200u. For years I used a 27" iMac as my main screen, but the glare off the glass wasn’t great, and I’d always be increasing/decreasing the screen brightness depending on how sunny it was.

Walter Appleton Clark was one of the most promising young talents in the illustration field in 1900. He painted this beautiful and subtle watercolor at the age of 23. Note how he mastered the values in what might have been a muddy scene. The light source creates a sharp contrast against that profile, and the structure of the whole picture flows from there.
