In today’s video tutorial, I’m going to take you through the process of creating a mascot character to go within a retro cereal box design, using a mixture of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. We will begin in Illustrator to draw the character, using simplified shapes based on the old mid-century style of cartoons and mascot designs with basic hand-drawn strokes and limited colours.

‘The Dog’ is an exhibition at Chatsworth House which explores the Cavendish family’s love for dogs, through paintings, drawings, sculpture, letters, photographs and contemporary art. In order to engage young visitors with the exhibition, playing cards were devised which contained interesting facts. The cards encouraged children to find various breeds throughout the house, hidden within the various works of art.

The Place is a contemporary dance school based in the heart of London, leading the way in dance training, creation and performance. For their upcoming ‘Family Dance Day’ they needed event collateral that attracted young families whilst reflecting the high quality of their workshops. For this project I used the beautiful event photography of Rob Greig , taken at past workshops, and combined them with hand drawn elements to add further expression, colour and life.
