Florence Henri was a pioneering surrealist artist, photographer, painter, and pianist. After encountering Berlin’s avant-garde artists, she shifted her interest from music to painting, and she began studying painting in Berlin in 1914. Her teacher, László Moholy-Nagy, introduced photography to her and encouraged her to experiment.

. “She grew orchids and watered them with water from the fish pond,” the artist remembers. She never got to see her daughter become a photographer, but her memory can be found in all of the pictures she’s made—particularly the cherry blossom photography. “She loved chrysanthemums most of all.”
