My favorite Joel Shapiro sculpture is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art – an orange dancer-like structure that has made me smile since the first day I arrived in New York, now 23 year ago. The project integrates past design and materials used in the space, including from the original 2004 stairs. Respect is paid to their Elders past, present, and emerging, with hope for an optimistic and inclusive future for Indigenous communities. For example, curtains allow the user to open or divide a space as fit.

Meanwhile, in the EuroCucina section of the fair, there was equal focus on cooking as a science and as an art form, with innovative new approaches to range hoods, steam ovens, and storage solutions sharing space with sculptural new kitchen systems. Part lighting display, part water feature, the installation made for a calming centrepiece.

In 2014, photographer Milos Bicanski revisited a series of venues constructed for the 2004 edition of the Olympics in Athens, Greece. A symbol of winding migrant journeys, the sculptural form culminates in panoramic views of the landscape. “For me, it’s a metaphor for the journeys of migrants who passed through this building.”
