What is the Purpose of a Book Cover? The thinking on this has changed dramatically during the evolution of modern trade publishing since the 1900s. Once book jackets were intended simply to protect the valuable binding. Actually, before 1820, books were sold as unbound gathered pages. The book buyer was responsible for getting the text blocks bound, presumably to match the rest of their library therefore no jacket or cover was supplied.
We all know the somewhat cliché, overused phrase, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” As someone who walks the line between design and text, I’d like to think that that’s not always the case. But what the following three creatives and Wix users prove, is that when illustration is combined with a bucket-load of integrity, relentless motivation and an important cause, a picture can definitely be worth so very, very much.

Jonas is the CEO of the design agency LA + B in Stockholm and teaches Semiotics and ID generation at Konstfack Stockholm, and guest lectures among others at LTH in Lund, Arkitekthögskolan / KTH Stockholm and Berghs Stockholm.
