Italian artist Michele Volpi tattoos highly detailed conceptual pieces using black ink and the negative space of her clients’ skin. With a surrealist style and a monochromatic palette, Volpi inks diagrams of insects, plants, and human anatomy that resemble vintage illustrations borrowed from science textbooks. With precise lines and controlled dotwork, each tattoo looks as if it were printed rather than done by hand.

Joan of Arc is a 1948 American hagiographic epic film directed by Victor Fleming, produced by Walter Wanger and starring Ingrid Bergman as the French war heroine. It is the last project of Fleming before his death in 1949, only two months after its release. From Thomas Heatherwick comes the 1000 Trees project, a massive mixed use development just outside of Shanghai. Described more as future topography than as architecture, the complex has a distinctive stepped profile, populated by enormous planters and trees. Set on Suzhou Creek, the development is part of the city’s trendy M50 district. Hundreds of columns help support the building and each hold.

In the unsettling 2009 sculpture series “Handheld,” small models of furniture appear to be made out of human skin. In actuality British artist Jessica Harrison created the sculptures using casts of her own hands. The sculptures intentionally blur the division between the human body and its environment. Much of her work is anatomically-themed—we previously wrote about her series of Bloody Boudoir.
