On her return to China, she founded her own design studio, MOU, which focuses on illustration, motion design and art direction. As a member of the Visual Arts Workshop arm of the Organization of the Black American Culture—or OBAC, pronounced as oba-see to invoke a Yoruba word ( oba ) meaning “leader” or “chief”—Abernathy led the layout of the community mural that was painted “guerrilla-style” on a decaying building at the corner of 43rd Street and Langley Avenue.

Gail Anderson is a graphic designer and writer who graduated from the School of Visual Arts. Irma started her career at The Government Printing and Publishing Office by doing an internship. In 1970, Dorothy organized the exhibition Black Artists in Graphic Communication, which profiled 49 young black designers.

Hip-hop music has given us some of the most iconic photographs in music during its relatively short history; it’s always been a visual art form, first expressed by its graffiti pioneers, breakdancers and then through photography and music videos. Back in 2018, I visited the exhibition, Street Dreams at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam.
