Alfred Kubin, a Bohemian printmaker and illustrator, was a key Symbolist and Expressionist figure. Supernatural animals and sexual brutality were common in his imaginative black-and-white illustrations. Most famously, Kubin illustrated German editions of Edgar Allan Poe and Fyodor Dostoevsky.
