And now we're back for 2023 with another bumper crop of amazing gift ideas from independent artists and shops. And this one has been designed by Dutch designer/printmaker Karel Martens. To guard against that happening, last year we compiled the ultimate 2022 Christmas gift guide for creatives.
The 2024 winners were chosen by an expert judging panel consisting of printmaker and previous Illustration Awards winner James Albon, author, illustrator, and animator Yasmeen Ismail, founder and director of Gran Salón Mexico Maru Aguzzi, and esteemed illustrator and cartoonist Chris Riddell.
But just like his biggest inspiration and obsession, Charley Harper, Chris's illustrations have recently focused on shape, texture and colour. Combined with an aesthetic from traditional printmaking techniques, he's settled into a new role as a graphic illustrator. What are you hoping to achieve in 2023?
I predominantly use dip and reed pens for linework, pencil crayon and pastels for texture, and brushes for more painterly marks with watercolour and gouache," he says. However, I am also interested in printmaking methods, screenprinting, mono printing, etching, and true grain.
Each one showcases her unique style of texture and collage and comes with a recycled brown craft envelope.
