It was completed in November 2019 and is built on the site of the old National Olympic Stadium (which was constructed for the Tokyo 1964 Olympics). These were designed by Ryo Taniguchi and chosen from a public competition voted on by the Mascot Selection Panel and Japanese elementary schoolchildren.

One of my favorite pieces by the artist Shannon Ebner is ASTER/SK R/SK R/SK, a work that comprises four flickering light boxes spelling out ASTER/SK over two lines.
