It was completed in November 2019 and is built on the site of the old National Olympic Stadium (which was constructed for the Tokyo 1964 Olympics). The torch has been inspired by Japan’s cherry blossoms with a pattern that resembles petals. The stadium has had a controversial design process.

Based on an image of four abstract concrete trees designed by Jan and Joe Martel for the Paris exhibition of the decorative arts in 1925, Boyce developed a pattern on paper that looks a bit like a repeating art deco motif. exhibition view), 2019.
