Artist Draws Video Game Characters With Their Full Inventory

According to Linda Bouderbala: “There is one thing I think about every time I play an RPG, and I felt like I had to paint it! I was playing Pokemon Sword lately, and while I have over a thousand items in my backpack, everything seems normal, I can run and go anywhere. But, in real life, it would be extraordinarily different, especially with a bike and a cooking pot on my back.

So I decided to illustrate the playable characters with their stock of items, as if they really had to carry everything, without any magic bags.”

“For these illustrations, as it’s watercolor and there are a lot of details, it takes me at least 7 hours to finish one. I often start by replaying the game, so that I can immerse myself in the universe and remember all those little objects you collect, so I can be more accurate.

I get most of my ideas in my bed! I think that it’s because, at the time, I let my thoughts go… It allows me to take a step back and put things into perspective, and finally find some funny ideas.”

“At some point, it can be hard to find new ideas again and again… But, fortunately, I never had to deal with creative block. I think there are so many ways to create, that ideas will always find their way.

Sometimes, an idea can come up because you notice something in particular, like “How can my character can run and jump with all these kinds of stuff in his bag?” or “If I manage to have a tan line of a shirt, it should be the same for our favorite anime characters who dresses the same every day!”

And other times, ideas can come from a medium or a technique. For example, I thought about color teams while I was doing an inventory of all the markers I had. So when I start to feel like I’m going in circles, I try to think of something else, like what I would like to do. Do I want to paint or draw? Watercolor, markers, or digital? And in general, it helps me!”

“It can be hard to find your own style in this jungle of talents nowadays! I see a lot of Instagram profiles that literally copy and paste the style of other illustrators and I think this is really a pity.

There is space for every style and nothing is more satisfying than to find your own! And of course, it’s a lot of work. I’m not even sure that I’ve found mine yet. But I work hard on it, every day trying to become better and figure out what I like to do”

“As for my future aspirations and goals for my work, it’s kind of simple: my ultimate goal is to be 100% confident in myself!

I would love to be able to draw everything that’s in my mind, as I see it, whether traditionally or digitally. For now, there is still some project and ideas that I don’t do because I know I won’t be able to do them the way I picture them in my mind and that’s so frustrating!”
