Icons to use in any design of your choosing.

Starting my design journey, I always used to look at other people’s designs and wonder “how did they do that?” on several notes. One aspect I used to wonder about was icons. When I needed an icon, I would look for an image that was the right color and put it in its place. Sometimes I took screenshots of my phone screen and cropped out the icons.😂

Now I know better (phew!), and now answer the same question when reviewing the work of designers just starting out “where do I get icons for my project from?”. Many sites provide you with tons of icons. But, one place which isn’t getting the hype it deserves is the Figma Community. There are so many resources there — icons, illustrations, UI kits, name it! — all for members of the community to use.

When choosing icons to use in my designs, there are two things I consider each time;

  1. The style of the icon. Is it rounded? Hand-drawn? Does it fit the style or mood I am going for in my design?
  2. The source of the icon: Some icon packs are extensive in the number of icons rendered. This is very helpful since I don’t always know from the start, all the icons I need for a project. I don’t like having tons of icon packs strewn all over my Figma drafts. As such, I am very careful when selecting packs to use.

So based on these two considerations, here are 10 icon packs picked from the Figma Community that you can use in your projects:

Unicons by Iconscout

Iconscout provided this pack of icons all in SVG format for general use. The icons span different categories making them very suitable for use in a variety of projects. The icons toe the borderline of playful, unique but familiar.

Remix Icons 2.5.0- Line & Fill by Elton Behari

Remix icons have this sort of light touch to the way they were designed. This gives them a different feel to other thicker-lined icons. It also is quite extensive and that’s a relief.
