Death of a?Typeface

I Love Typography

Robert Granjon (1513–90) was a French type designer who, in 1557, invented a new style of typeface that was modeled on contemporary handwriting. It later came to be know as Civilité, after the civilité of etiquette books that the typeface often appeared in. Although Granjon wished for his Civilité to become the national typeface of France, it never really caught on, and it never seriously competed with Roman and Italic fonts.

Reuters An art gallery in Paris has sought inspiration in ancient China to help it enforce social distancing, by providing hats with winged extensions for visitors. Reuters The colourful papier-mâché hats are modelled on headgear from the Song dynasty, which ruled China between 960 and 1279, with extensions just long enough to keep wearers the one metre apart stipulated in France’s COVID-19.

At the beginning of the 1960s, Peter Max was a talented, if conventional, illustrator. By the end of the 1960s, he had popularized a new psychedelic style, with bright pop art colors and cosmic, magical tropes. For a few years his style became emblematic of the 60s counterculture. That was long enough to make Max a very wealthy man. He worked in an 18 room art studio overlooking the Hudson River and drove a Rolls Royce which he had decorated.
