Human cells make up only 43 percent of the body, the rest are bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea, and other microscopic organisms. These species colonize both the inside and outside of our bodies. In her work, she calls for attention to the importance of such minuscule species. Microbial material affects our mental and physical well-being, which science has only just started to explore.
