Inktober 2015 - A Daily Ink Illustration Challenge

Emmeline Illustration

ink inktober inktober 2015 newsToday marks the start of Inktober, a daily ink illustration challenge running throughout October each year. I took part last year and it was incredible for pushing my motivation to create and for sparking new ideas (I'm currently working on a series of comics based around The Falconeer above!). I'm a huge fan of monthly illustration challenges. It's often so easy to get sucked in to the admin side of business (or life?)

This was a speedy idea, as I so, so nearly did this exact thing in Tesco yesterday.

Creating Monsters with Sam Boucher

Creative Live

After seeing these screenshots from his upcoming game, we had a few questions for Sam Boucher. He’s the creator and designer of GNOG : a wondrous journey through a universe of playfully interactive monster heads. Tell us a little bit about yourself. When and how did you become a designer? In 2009 I finished my multimedia degree in college and went to work at a design agency as an intern in Montreal.

Illustrating Autumn Faries with The Big Draw & The RSC

Emmeline Illustration

Every so often, I'll stop for a second and be hit with the realisation that I haven't drawn anything in ages. It can be surprising how little physical drawing time can go in to running an illustration business sometimes! Yesterday was one of those days, and I fancied a little bit of a warm up before delving in to some serious work. You may have seen The Big Draw floating around on social media or the news recently - they're, very basically, a huge campaign to get people drawing.

Woodland Party "Behind The Scenes" Final Instalment

Chris Dunn Illustration/Fine Art

For my previous posts click here, Part 1 and Part 2 Below are a series of progress photographs taken as I worked my way through the painting. Moving on from basic blocking in of colour. You can see here I am starting to get past the local colour stage and really moving into finding form using colour. For example look at the fox playing skittles.

Woodland Party "Behind The Scenes" Continued

Chris Dunn Illustration/Fine Art

See my previous post here. My drawing was approved so it was time to start work on the painting. The process to get the finished drawing on to stretched watercolour paper can be a bit tedious but it has to be done. Firstly I enlarge the scanned rough drawing in Photoshop and then I print the image on A3 layout paper. The layout is just thick enough to go through my printer and thin enough to act like tracing paper.

Christmas Lists & Childhood Inspiration

Emmeline Illustration

Christmas is juuuust around the corner now, and so you may have seen my Christmas gift guide pop up on my blog earlier this week. Putting the gift guide together made me feel incredibly nostalgic for the late nights scrawling my childhood Christmas lists and (our little family tradition) sticking them halfway out of the letterbox for the robins to collect for Farther Christmas!

School Playground' Watercolour & Gouache 66 x 50cm After working on other jobs and taking a week off to teach a summer school course, I have finally finished 'School Playground'. I'm pleased with the overall result but I do think I could have developed the relationship between the characters and first school further. Maybe by depicting a young animal going through the doorway or a few heads poking out of the windows?

Useful Pinterest advice for designers and illustrators

Ohn Mar Win

A few days ago I made a short video on Periscope about Pinterest, tall pins and foodie illustrations. As these videos are only around for 24 hours I've decided to blog about the main points I mentioned, as many folks found it very useful. I'd like to point out one important aspect of Pinterest: approx 80% of pins on Pinterest are repins, so the image has kind of been 'recycled' over and over which is great as that's how your work is spread, and found in searches.

Branding a Bakery: A Logo Case Study

Creative Live

Entrepreneur and baker du jour Jason Sigala wanted to open his own bakery in Southern California, offering quality, old-fashioned American desserts made from scratch. He wanted his shop’s branding to have a decidedly mid-century East Coast look and feel. Tim Frame was commissioned to create the brand identity for this foodie start-up, that would be called Towne Bakery.

Keeping It Vintage With Shawn Khemsurov, Design Director Of Homage

Creative Live

The one thing all successful apparel brands have in common is a strong point of view, a unique perspective that informs every one of the many details that go into creating a garment: concept, silhouette, materials, graphics, presentation, and so forth. Few brands do a better job of articulating their point of view than Homage , largely driven by Design Director Shawn Khemsurov’s taste for design that’s a little odd, naive, and off-kilter.

Draw North West Poster Illustration

Emmeline Illustration

As a great little warm up project for the start of 2015, I was asked to illustrate this month's Draw North West poster. You may have seen my post about DNW a few months ago, and hopefully you've popped down to one yourself, but in the simplest form: Draw North West is a Manchester meet up for creatives to chat, drink and scribble silly things. I've been going to DNW since the first meet a good few years ago, and I've met so many brilliant people so far.

Making it to 30 ILLUSTRATED RECIPES and WHY do I draw so much food?

Ohn Mar Win

I've just submitted my 30th illustrated recipe for They Draw and Cook, so they can consider publishing them in a book. It's been a true labour of love and far trickier than I anticipated. The trade off is I've received much work from clients seeing my ideas, and I hope they continue to check in on the TDAC site. Here are the last two recipes, for easy baguettes and Christmas gingerbread. I think this is also a good opportunity to explore the background of my food mania.

Woodland Party "Behind The Scenes"

Chris Dunn Illustration/Fine Art

I have recently completed a very complicated watercolour painting featuring a multitude of British wild animals having a good old 'knees up'! I thought I would show you the various stages I went through in creating the scene. To begin with the sketching stage. I began with thumbnail sketches, I think I did only eight in total before I found a suitable viewpoint.

Porter McKnight of Atreyu on design, photography, and directing his first music video

Creative Live

Art and music have always gone hand in hand, and some of my favorite memories are listening to a new album while poring over the artwork at the same time. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that most bands seem to have at least one graphic designer/photographer in their ranks, who usually ends up being their defacto art director. In the case of Orange County metalcore legends Atreyu , that person is their bassist Porter McKnight.

'Investing In Stockport' Animation Design

Emmeline Illustration

Towards the end of last year I was asked to work on my very first animation for a client! Chog Zoo Animation wanted me on board for a commission to work on an animation for Stockport Council - and I jumped at the chance to work as part of a team, and see my characters in motion! The animation was based around the not-so-nice proposed budget cuts, and the idea of working with the local community to hear their opinion on moving forwards.

Playing with 'Creative Playgrounds'

Ohn Mar Win

Some of you know I take part in daily arty challenges. Last August it started with month of hand lettering daily, then a month of food, then desserts and biscuits. There was no major thought process behind them, it was to keep up with my drawing skills without engaging my brain as to its final use, if any.

Warming Up Watercolour & Gouache 51 x 39cm After a break from painting to work on other jobs, I have finally finished Mr Badger's kitchen. I'm very pleased with the final result but it does feel like I took longer on it than I should have. A possible reason for the drawn out painting process could be I decided to have red and black tiles, and a complicated Persian rug on the kitchen floor. Below you can see a few photos I took as I painted.

Poppy England are a lovely little company inspired by picture books, making dresses for little'uns and grown ups (I've been a fan for ages!). They sent me this Beatrice Boats dress to feature in this project, along with a teeny tiny illustrated book that comes with each item. I went out for a walk on my lunchbreak today and snapped a couple of pictures.

Letterer Martina Flor is, too. “For this wallpaper I worked on a flower power inspired design, using letter shapes with organic forms that remind to the movement of water,” says Martina. “As usual, I shared a hand-sketch with Creative Live’s design team, and once we were all happy about the direction I moved onto the vector drawing, improving shapes, curves and proportions, and working within a color scheme that works with the concept.”

Overly Critical Music Snob Cat

Emmeline Illustration

I've been meaning to take part in Off Life Magazine's quick draw challenge for a while, and luckily for me they fired it back up a few weeks ago and I jumped on board. The basic idea is: they tweet a theme, and you have one hour to respond to it with an illustration. This week, the theme was 'weirdest thing I've seen at a festival', and I ran with it, creating overly-critical-music-snob-cat.

As a child, you may have been captivated by shapes. If you never grew out of that stage (or have always wanted to revisit it), you’re probably either working in the field of design, or at least have a strong interest in it. For those looking to bone up on their understanding of design concepts, or just looking for new inspiration, a childhood toy might be the perfect way to dive back in and play with shapes, forms, and patterns.

Free books?! Yup, that's right. I heard about this place a while ago and definitely had to have a snoop. Books For Free (as part of Healthy Planet) has actually been open for a while now in its Preston branch, and it's great to see it's still running. The initiative aims to rescue thousands of books from landfill by simply giving them away to willing readers at centres and festivals nationwide!
