Frank Anselmo, Featured in Graphis Journal #366, is an Unconventional Advertising Creative Genius

Graphis Master Frank Anselmo got his start as a creative at BBDO New York where he won BBDO’s first-ever One Show Gold Pencil for something that he does best in his work: unconventional media concepts. Frank has since worked on projects at over 20 companies including at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California. Anselmo’s work has earned him numerous awards including ADC, Clios & Andy Golds, and Cannes Lions. 

Anselmo founded The Unconventional Advertising program at The School of Visual Arts (SVA) was founded in 2006 and is now recognized as, “The most awarded ad class in history.” Anselmo’s class has led SVA to the prestigious ADC School of the Year award three years in a row. Anselmo’s students have also one more One Show Pencils than any other school in history. His students have won 20 Graphis Platinum Awards in the New Talent Competitions, and countless Gold and Silver.

Featured in Graphis Journal Issue #366, his students’ advertising designs are captivating to any viewer. Each of the designs featured, both here and in the journal, are eye-catchingly bizarre. Anselmo helps students take ideas from the ordinary and make them extraordinary; I mean, who hasn’t joked about their eye baggage after a couple of nights of binge-watching?

With the semester’s end, what kind of advice do you give to the class?

Absorb the best creative work in the world from the past 10 years (at least), then eliminate it from your brain and do something completely different.

What’s a valuable tip you can share with students on their path to success?

The truth is that there’s not any secrets. It comes down to loving what you do & subsequently not just “wanting” to do it, but “needing” to do it.
