Presenting America’s Latest Crime Against Gastronomy, Cheetos Mac ‘n Cheese

To say this has been a year of unexpected unpleasantness would be an understatement. There have been some surprising plusses to the pandemic, for example, marine life got a brief respite from humanity, and traffic disappeared from the 405 freeway.

Another bright side to 2020 is the arrival of Cheetos-flavored mac and cheese.

Spotted by junk food sleuth Candy Hunting, and later confirmed by PepsiCo to Delish, the new Cheetos Mac ‘n Cheese will be available this month in three varieties, “Bold & Cheesy,” “Jalapeño” and “Flamin Hot,” in boxes and single-serving cups. Instead of elbow macaroni, the devious Chester uses spiral pasta and promises “authentic Cheetos cheesiness,” whatever that means.

The packaging hides no surprises and follows the same aesthetic found on Cheetos’ bags. The devilish spokes-cheetah looms large on the front, with the top half sporting a bold colored background based on flavor, and the bottom half features a bowl of the cheesy pasta against a black background. The execution brings some serious breakfast cereal aisle energy to otherwise bland rows of macaroni and cheese boxes.

Cheetos’ take on an American staple and comfort food that apparently some kids eat for breakfast would appear to scratch that cheesy itch without the orange fingers, so 2020 has that going for it at least.
