Repeat After Me: Four New Poster Annual 2022 Entries!

These Poster Annual 2022 entries focus on both social and political issues as well as art and media promotions!

Designer João Machado is currently based in Lisbon, Portugal. His studio, João Machado Design, mainly focuses on book design and other art projects. His poster “Tolerance” (above, left) was created for The Tolerance Travelling Poster Show. This project showcases posters from artists all over the world as a way to foster important conversations regarding tolerance and inclusion and has so far visited thirty-four different countries. Machado’s poster features a scale with the word “intolerance” divided between both sides. The left side, “In”, weighs more than the right side boasting “tolerance,” indicating that being intolerant is a heavy weight. The bold red background and Machado’s use of minimalism make the typeface pop out of the page.

FX Networks and designers from Icon Arts Creatives created a stunning promotional poster for FX’s new show Black Narcissus. This limited series premiered in 2020 and is based on the best-selling novel by Rumer Godden. “Black Narcissus – Key Art 2” (above, right) depicts a nun whose black religious habit skillfully fades into the background of the poster. The typeface and images are all in black and white, with pops of red for the nun’s nails, lips, and the flower in her hand. The “i” in “Narcissus” is replaced with a cross, capping off an eerie poster for a premier that’s not for the faint-hearted.

Designer Viktor Koen received his BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design and his MFA from the School of Visual Arts. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Nature, Time, Newsweek, Esquire, and National Geographic. His entry, created under Attic Child Press and titled “SVA Summer Illustration Residency” (above, left), is a promotional poster for SVA’s undergraduate online residency program for this summer. An octopus tentacle is frozen inside a popsicle, hinting that the work students would create during this residency will be utterly unique. Koen utilizes warm yellow for summer sunshine and lets it fade into cooler blues, an ode to the sea and to octopi. Any aspiring art student who views this poster knows that this program is going to be great!

This last entry is from Canadian designer Derwyn Goodall. He is the founder of Goodall Integrated Design, a full-service strategic branding and design studio. Goodall Integrated Design embraces “an ideas-driven design process, meaningful collaboration and a rigorous attention to craft.” Goodall’s poster “Repeat After Me” (above, right) repeats the phrase “Please repeat after me. 2021 is an opportunity, a time to move on, a time to invent the new normal, a time to change, a time to be kind to others, a time to be thoughtful, a time to connect, a time to be a friend, a time to value what you have, a time to celebrate diversity, a time for empathy & understanding.” This saying is fragmented, covering the entire poster in a deep blue typeface. In the background are flowers, suns, and other positive symbols that invoke a sense of growth we can work towards achieving this year.
