“Purple is Black Blooming” by Photographer Aaron Chapman

Based on the Gold Coast, Australia, artist and writer Aaron Chapman considers the foundational landscapes of youth in his ongoing project, “Purple is Black Blooming.” Shot in his hometown, where he now raises children of his own, the work—which includes a selection of photographs and a large sculpture made from the packing boxes he used to move from his hometown—explores themes of childhood, memory, and home in a way that feels both deeply personal and also universal. As Chapman explains, “Purple is Black Blooming invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences in their childhood home(s) and to consider how these significant physical environments protect intimacy, provide refuge and keep memories.”
