Painting

Artist Spotlight: Kseniya Galper

A selection of work by Boston-based painter and illustrator Kseniya Galper. Describing herself as a “slow painter,” Galper works mainly in oil on wood because of the precision it allows — a process that involves observing, measuring, obsessing, overthinking, giving up and coming back:

“I love the geometry of human shape. I’m infinitely fascinated by painting people, trying to capture subtle facial expressions, nuances of body language, how all of that is influenced by the model’s setting, or even by my own mood. I love how uncomfortable it can be when the woman in the painting looks directly at the viewer, or how by oddly placing one element in the background you can change the meaning of the whole painting.”
