The No Bullshit Guide to Making a Living from your Art

INTRODUCING… THE NO BULLSHIT GUIDE TO MAKING A LIVING FROM YOUR ART!

Throughout my career I have felt that there are not enough honest resources for aspiring illustrators. Sure, you might know how to develop your drawing skills, but how do you get people to part cash for them? Why does no one talk about the business side of illustration? In the early days of my career I felt that making a living as an artist was inaccessible to me. I wished other professionals spoke openly about things like money or making contacts, but equally, addressing the elephant in the room felt awkward too.

Five years ago, after ten years of working in the creative industry, I decided to give myself another shot at pursuing a career as a freelance illustrator, determined to be honest about my experiences. I started to write a blog about the industry, and after many connected with it, I realised that a lot of freelance creatives felt isolated in their careers and lacking support (particularly surrounding business skills). This led me to conduct a pricing survey in 2019 to investigate how illustrators charged for their work and what fees they were commanding. The results of this were eye-opening and it left me feeling that more needed to be done to increase the transparency in the industry and to stop the frequent exploitation of artists and their skills. I got so many anonymous responses from illustrators who said they felt trapped in a vicious circle of under-valuing their work.

”I’m one of the people who is ruining it for everyone else because of my lack of confidence.”

So, I decided to write a course that provides insight into the behind the scenes stuff that no one talks about. If you've ever been told you're 'talented' but feel continually frustrated that you're not making a living from your creative work, or if all the business advice on offer makes you want to stick your pencils in your eyes, this course is for you. I can’t promise to make you rich, but I can share practical tips and down to earth lessons that will build your confidence and help you to feel more knowledgable as you grow as an artist and as a business.
