World Illustration Award winners revealed

The Association of Illustrators has announced the overall winners, category winners and shortlist of 200 projects, whittled down from 4,300 entries, featuring artists such as Aysha Tengiz and Amber Vittoria.

Amber Vittoria and Mariajo Ilustrajo have won the top prizes at this year’s World Illustration Awards, from 24 category winners and a 200-strong shortlist revealed by the Association of Illustrators. Vittoria won the professional award in the Product and Packaging category for her piece Women in the Workplace, commissioned by Facebook, and took the overall prize for professionals. Ilustrajo won the new talent prize in the Children’s Publishing category for his book Flooded.

Ten categories feature a professional and new talent winner, alongside four cross-category prizes, two of which – the Innovation Cross Category Award supported by It’s Nice That, and SAA Agents Award for New Talent – went to Jiawen Chen for Me Inside. The AOI Member award went to Joshua Donkor for Generational Memories, and the Directory of Illustration award went to Menghui for Balance.

In the ten categories, the Advertising professional winner was Jan Robert Duennweller for Rimowa’s Travel With Purpose, while the new talent winner was Peter Phobia for Neighbours of New York.

In the Publishing category, Aysha Tengiz won the professional prize for A Spot of Loneliness and Dion MBD won the new talent award for Until We Meet Again. In Book Covers, Laura Wächter won the pro category for her designs for the Annie Ernaux Book Series, and Ana Victoria Morales won the new talent award for her cover for All Good Things are Wild and Free. While in Children’s Publishing, Yasmeen Ismail won the pro award for Would you like a banana? For Commercial Publishing, Francis Vallejo won the pro award for Anansi Boys and Junghee Jo won the new talent award for her project, Island.

In Product and Packaging, Lucia Vinti won the new talent award for Van Gogh and Britain for Families, commissioned by Tate. Eleni Debo won the professional award in the editorial category for her piece Eloping Tradition for De Volkskrant, and Faye Yuqing Yan won the new talent award for her piece Brexit Starter Pack. Daniel Liévano won the professional award in the Science and Technology category for The Lancet, and Rina Allek won the new talent prize for the Anatomy Fun Facts Book.

The prizes for site specific illustration went to Xavier Segers for A Vixen’s Tale as the pro, and Lauren Emmons for Wee Thee Vikings Gallery as the new talent winner.

In the Exploration category, which generally honours uncommissioned work that doesn’t slot into the other categories, Jacques Kleynhans won the pro award for Zeb and the Bungle Bee of Death and Jess Hannigan won the new talent award for After Party.

The organisation has also launched an online showcase of the 200 shortlisted projects whittled down from 4,300 entries, which you can explore from today.
