One of graphic design’s best friends is marketing. The two disciplines work together towards the same goals – getting businesses noticed so they can get more sales and thrive. Market Positioning, sometimes shortened down simply to “positioning or position” is a tenet of marketing theory. As I understand it, the term itself is more of an industry phrase that is catching on. What I do know is that I’m hearing more and more clients start to use this phrase without really understanding what it is, why it’s important, or how it relates to graphic design. This is why today I wanted to go over some basics on market positioning and how it ties into graphic design.

What is Market Positioning?

Market positioning is the place a company or brand occupies in the minds of its customers and how it differentiates itself from its competition. This concept has roots in the early part of the last century. It’s thought to have started in the era after World War 1 and really began to take hold in the middle of the 20th century. Much like technology this marketing strategy is something that continually changes and evolves to keep up with modern times.

Why do I need it?

If you run a business, you need to be able to communicate effectively with your audience about who your business is, what it does, and why they should pick you over your competition. Confusion loses customers and clarity gains them. Market positioning is an easy way to communicate this value with your customers in a way that will stick with them.

How does Graphic Design work with Market Positioning?

Market positioning combined with your business’s core values makes up the base of your branding. Your branding is your reputation with your customers and your marketing position heavily influences this. Our brains process visual content faster and more efficiently than written content, which is why having good visual marketing materials work in your business’ favor. They allow your message, your reputation, and your market position to lock into their minds. This is great because a business that is remembered is one that is hired and referred and that’s the name of the game in business!

Now you have a better understanding of what market positioning is and how it ties into graphic design. Allowing your business to brand itself better so you can sell more and stress less.  Does your business use market position to help it grow?
