The Do Book collection holds a special place in many creatives' hearts. The Do Book Company is an independent publishing house in London that grew out of the Do Lectures, which has been gathering together the world's doers, disruptors and pioneers to share their stories since 2007. But to be honest, it made me nervous too.

London-based illustrator and type designer Bjoern Altmann has turned his attention to the hidden wonder of manhole covers in his latest book, which recreates designs from over 80 countries as vector images. Bjoern first became aware of manhole covers in a design context when studying graphic design in Germany.

Last summer, while browsing the fiction aisles at Powell’s Books in Portland, a fat black spine caught my attention. At the top, the book’s title was typeset in tapering white capitals. An image of a rainbow sprang from the bottom of the spine and over onto the back cover. I slid the book out.
