San Francisco Design Agency Guacamole Airplane Releases Sustainable Packaging Supplier Guide

Every brand wants to be more sustainable, even the ones that merely pay lip service to being a little more green, often because they don’t have the wherewithal to disrupt their supply chain or manufacturing process.

Of course, they also might not know where to start. If only there was some kind of guide that could point businesses in the right direction.

Well, that’s what San Francisco-based design agency Guacamole Airplane recently did by launching its Sustainable Packaging Supplier Guide. Inspired by the open-source movement, they created an online archive of sustainable materials for brands that want to package their goods in environmentally-friendly ways. Once there, you’ll find everything from seaweed bags and compostable inks to mushroom foams and six-pack rings made from molded pulp, a virtual cornucopia of innovative materials that designers and brands can use right this very second.

"We hope the guide will help inform and encourage brands beyond our client base to work towards better packaging decisions," said Ian Montgomery, Guacamole Airplane's Creative Director.

"When we set up the studio, we made it a goal to share everything we have learned about sustainable packaging," added Montgomery. The agency doesn’t believe that sustainability has to be some closely-held secret, and similar to organizations like Precious Plastic or brands like Allbirds (who they have also worked with), they freely share their proprietary materials.

Guacamole Airplane isn’t your everyday, run-of-the-mill design agency—and no, we’re not just talking about their name. They’re an agency that focuses solely on sustainable projects, having created things like compostable seaweed packaging for Cosman’s Urban Farming Co. and biodegradable takeout containers for New York Design Week.

So for brands and designers looking to get a little more cassava and algae in their packaging’s diet, head on over to their supplier guide, and if you know of any more materials worthy of their attention, don’t hesitate to give them a shout.
