As a member of the Visual Arts Workshop arm of the Organization of the Black American Culture—or OBAC, pronounced as oba-see to invoke a Yoruba word ( oba ) meaning “leader” or “chief”—Abernathy led the layout of the community mural that was painted “guerrilla-style” on a decaying building at the corner of 43rd Street and Langley Avenue.
