Like lots of teams in Major League Baseball, the Pirates initially favored a patriotic red, white, and blue color scheme through the first half of the 20th Century to represent the colors of the US flag. However, they switched this up to a black and gold color scheme in 1948, to match the colors of the Pittsburgh flag.
