Dan Cosgrove Impresses with his Timeless Designs and Illustrations For Stamps and Posters

This week’s Graphis Master is the Chicago-based illustrator and designer, Dan Cosgrove. He majored in graphic design at the University of Cincinnati where he became interested in illustration with signature type design. His career started at the National Park Service in Denver and then as a designer with Cato Johnson in Cincinnati before ultimately deciding to shift to freelance in Chicago.

He has shown versatility throughout his career, doing vibrant, unique poster art, timeless stamps, his ad designs, and more. He has done work for clients such as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the United States Postal Service, Netflix, Texas Monthly, Starwood Hotels, and more. He works often with painters, dancers, musicians, and instrument makers in Chicago’s Fine Arts Building.

His award-winning work includes his “Air Chicago,” and “Cunard,” which was part of his travel poster series that won Gold in the Graphis Poster Annual 2011. and “Orchard Run” (above). His stamp designs of the Bixby and Mackinac Bridges also won Platinum in the Design Annual 2011.

He’s won a Gold medal from the Society of Illustrators and has appeared in their annuals. He’s also been presented in Graphis Poster and Design Annuals, 3×3 Annuals, and in Communication Arts. Dan’s work is not only very colorful but has a retro style that incorporates timeless typography.
